EGLISE SAINT-VÉNÉRAND
A Renaissance masterpiece
In the end of the Middle Ages, the Pont-de-Mayenne faubourg develop itself on the left bank. Consequently, the rich cloth merchants decide to build a new church closer to their houses.
Lord Guy XV layed the cornerstone in 1485. The lower parts of the main doorway still embodies the flamboyant gothic tradition of the late 15th century.
However, the church is extended as soon as 1522, with Second Renaissance additions. The higher part of the main doorway, the heavy triangular pediment, the lantern or the coffered cieling are good exemples of this style.
